UBL Season 2026 a huge success on and off the court

The 2026 New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) season marked an unprecedented turning point for the AU Waatu program.
For the first time since their entry into the national league in 2022, the Waatu brought elite intervarsity basketball directly to the heart of student life, transforming Pridham Hall on the City West Campus into an electrifying home fortress.
Transitioning from the State Basketball Centre - where home games were played until 2025 - to an on-campus venue proved to be an immediate catalyst for student engagement, university spirit, and incredible on-court success.
Hosting on-campus fixtures unlocked a vibrant game-day culture that made Pridham Hall the place to be. Game days evolved into accessible, campus-wide celebrations where students, staff, and basketball fans were treated to free barbecues and Red Bull, AU Waatu merchandise giveaways, and a wall of noise powered by hundreds of roaring supporters.
The crowds immediately reflected this new momentum, with opening home rounds against the University of Western Australia, the University of Tasmania and Monash University drawing 300 spectators each.

A new initiative for 2026, player sponsorships provided direct relief to student-athletes, reducing the financial costs of uniform and training. The generous player sponsors who backed our athletes this season included Legacy 3x3, FoodPlus, HIPE Hoops, Northline, and Pilates on Melbourne Street.
Alongside commercial support, the program championed practical career readiness through work-integrated learning opportunities for Adelaide University students.
Students were embedded directly into the Waatu's operations, gaining invaluable, hands-on experience across a range of professional areas. These included gameday sports physiotherapists, team assistant coaches, event setup, and media - including involvement filming live video broadcasts, commentary and on-air interviews, photography, and highlight clipping. These behind-the-scenes roles were delivered by a dedicated cohort of students, who we thank for their valuable contributions.

Feeding off the electric atmosphere in the stands and the robust support behind them, both AU Waatu teams delivered best-ever season finishes and win-loss records.
The men’s team once more went through to Quarter Finals in a season defined by dramatic comebacks - including from 22 points down on the road against Curtin University in Perth - and a first-ever win against the University of Sydney. They pushed the University of Newcastle to overtime in their Quarter Final before going down 78-74.
The women's squad put together a truly dominant campaign, topping the Southwest Conference with an outstanding 7-1 record, including a road victory against the University of Melbourne for the first time in the program’s history. By virtue of winning their Quarter Final, they earned the right to host the remainder of the season, with the women’s Semi Finals and Finals being played at Pridham Hall across two exciting dates in October.
Although their season finished as silver medallists after a 76-55 loss in the Final, the AU Waatu women proved that they belonged on the national stage, with the last game of the season against the University of Melbourne streaming live and free on 7Plus for the first time in the UBL’s history.

The dramatic surge in attendance, competitive success, and community engagement throughout 2026 reaffirmed the transformative power of an on-campus sporting home.
By bringing the AU Waatu into the core of campus life, the program connected athletics, academic pathways, and industry collaboration into a cohesive community experience. With heightened visibility and an expanding fanbase, the AU Waatu have firmly established a foundation that will foster university pride and inspire future generations of student-athletes.
