STAGE ONE
The first stage of the proposed Waite Oval masterplan will see redevelopment of the aged clubroom facilities, providing exciting new spaces and opportunities for clubs, spectators, students, and the wider community to use the Waite Oval precinct.
The proposed new 1100m2 clubrooms will offer athletes and referees a modern space in which to participate in sports, including:
✔ Four new unisex changerooms with adjoining showers and toilets
✔ A high-performance gym and recovery facilities, open to the public
✔ Two dedicated referee rooms with showers and toilets
✔ Two dedicated first aid rooms
The proposed first stage of the redevelopment will also see new social spaces catering to spectators and the wider community, including:
✔ Covered grandstand with BBQ facilities
✔ Indoor spectator area with canteen access
✔ Bar and café with private kitchen facilities
✔ Private function room and office/meeting spaces
✔ Public unisex toilets
✔ Public unisex accessible toilets
✔ Expanded storage areas
These proposed redevelopments crucially provide more private spaces for clubs, and no longer rely on shared spaces for clubs of different genders. They also increase revenue generating opportunities for clubs using the sportsgrounds and allow them to become more sustainable, while increasing comfort for spectators and providing non-sport uses for the wider community.
Stage One is estimated to cost $10M.
FUTURE STAGES
After redevelopment of the clubrooms, subsequent proposed stages of the Waite Oval masterplan will see upgrades to sportsgrounds and outdoor facilities, including:
✔ Complete resurfacing of adjacent playing grounds
✔ New irrigation system installation
✔ High lux sports lighting to illuminate the perimeter and keep games going after dark
✔ A new bitumen car park
The proposed sportsground layout post-redevelopment will provide a cricket ground, three soccer pitches, a rugby union field, two junior soccer pitches and a junior cricket ground. These grounds will allow for all levels of sport across all ages, meaning more opportunities for more people. The field layout will be able to be adjusted to facilitate other sports played on grass when required.
These proposed stages will allow for more and safer training opportunities for clubs, and make the facilities and sportsgrounds more appealing to local schools and clubs, industry and community groups, and state, national and international sporting organisations.
Future Stages are estimated to cost $10M, resulting in a total redevelopment budget of $20M.
Michelle Wilson, CEO of Adelaide University Sport and Fitness, hopes the broader community will continue to use the space to walk their dogs or kick the footy with kids, because it's a beautiful spot.
“In the new facility we'll have a café offering, with revenue helping future-proof the clubs that use that space. This will also allow the sports association to maximise the venue’s potential and connect the community into campus in a positive way. It will improve the student experience and offer a place for alumni to reconnect.”
Kim Evans, Adelaide University Rugby Club President, has been involved in rugby for 25 years and with University sports for 10 years, and is excited about what this redevelopment means for the future.
“The Waite Campus is the jewel in the crown. It's internationally recognised for its world class research and teaching. When Peter Waite gifted this wonderful site to the University in 1913, he specifically set aside this corner for University sport – quality sporting facilities were part of his grand vision for the precinct. This project will help this amazing campus reach its broader potential."
“We’re a big community, including students, adults, kids, all genders, all sexualities, and many different cultures. It isn’t just about running around with a ball on Saturdays; we're creating a welcoming, healthy space for everyone, not just in terms of getting out there and becoming fit and strong, but also for growing as a person in emotional and psychological safety."
The Waite clubrooms and oval are invaluable in connecting the community, improving the student experience and offering a place for our University alumni to reconnect. Your generosity today will improve the experience and opportunities for our athletes, clubs and members.
