Adelaide University Waatu Basketball Men and Women's Teams

The word ‘Waatu’ is Kaurna language for ‘coming together for a common goal’. The home of the University of Adelaide is on Kaurna land, for whom we pay our respects to as the Traditional Owners of the land, and our respects to Elders past and present.

Our men and women’s teams work on success, enjoyment and pride as a whole. The Waatu are the only South Australian team competing in the University Basketball League (UBL) and are excited to represent South Australia with pride as we work towards competing for Championships!

What is the UBL?

The University Basketball League (UBL) is a fully funded, gender equal, semi-professional national competition for university students. The UBL is managed by UniSport Australia https://www.unisport.com.au/about.

The UBL Season

The UBL season is from March – May, with away matches being played all across Australia. Adelaide Univeristy Sport and Fitness book and cover financial costs of interstate travel for their student athletes as they compete against the other 12 Teams across Australia. The basketball season consist of 13 mens and women’s teams who will compete for an eight-week season across the country. There is a two-week final series which is held at the end of the regular season for both mens and women's teams to be crowned the Champion of the UBL. https://www.unisport.com.au/university-basketball-league

UBL Trials

Open trial sessions are held in February each year involving a mix of skill development, drills and game play led by our expert coaching staff. Two squads of 16 players per team are selected to proudly represent AU Waatu.

What do men’s and women’s Waatu players love about the UBL?

Evie Lovell: “The ability to play with people that are all studying at University and experiencing the same things as you and getting to bond with them with a common love of basketball and getting to travel with them is what I love about it.”

Ashleigh Haigh: “Coming from the country originally I didn’t have many friends in Adelaide so being able to make some amazing friends from the men’s and women’s Waatu team has been great.”

Steve Parfitt: “The men’s and women’s Waatu teams are very well connected and it’s great to watch the women’s games before us and chat to the opposition and there’s no animosity compared to other competitions where more is on the line.”

Luke Mollet: “Being able to have an opportunity in Australian basketball to represent your University and travel the country and build that chemistry and comradery is just incredible”.
