Albert Set to Make a Splash at
UniSport Nationals Swimming
First-year medical student Albert An is diving headfirst into competition at this year’s UniSport Nationals Swimming Championships in Sydney, proudly representing the University of Adelaide in six events.
With a full schedule of 50m, 100m, and 200m Breaststroke, 50m and 200m Butterfly, and the 200m Individual Medley, Albert brings both talent and tenacity to the pool.
“I’m excited to attend my first University Nationals and will be happy to represent the University of Adelaide!” says Albert, who has been swimming competitively since childhood.
Swimming became a part of Albert's life in primary school, originally as a way to build strength and stay healthy after a period of illness. “Looking at it now, I’m glad I continued swimming as it has been an important part of my life so far,” he reflects.
Balancing a full academic load in the Bachelor of Medical Studies with elite training is no small feat, but Albert takes it all in stride.
“During my commute to training, I usually catch up on lectures,” he explains. “I try to manage my time well so I can attend all my classes and workshops, while still getting to as many training sessions as I can.”
Training up to seven times a week, Albert's preparation included a major milestone in April, competing at the Australian Open Nationals. “That experience really helped build my training base. Now I’m looking to build on that for Nationals,” he adds.
While Albert is aiming for personal bests and, ideally, a medal or two, his biggest swimming highlight so far was becoming a National Age Champion in 2023 at the Australian Age Swimming Championships. “It was a personally satisfying moment that reflected all the hard work and training I’ve put in over the years.”
As for the future? Albert is keeping an open mind. “I’m not entirely sure what the future holds, but I’m excited to find out - both in my studies and in swimming. I want to keep pushing my limits and seeing how far I can go. The only limit is the one I set for myself.”
With drive in the water and determination in his studies, Albert is one to watch, both at Nationals and beyond!
