AU Waatu Ready to Tip Off in UBL 2025 Season
Published Mon 04 Aug 2025
The 2025 New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) is here, and the University of Adelaide’s AU Waatu are ready to take the court as South Australia’s sole representative in this semi-professional competition.
Run by UniSport Australia, the UBL features the top university basketball teams from across the country in a fully funded, gender-equal, and semi-professional league. The season spans eight weeks of regular competition, followed by a two-week finals series to determine the champions.
Michelle Wilson, CEO of Adelaide University Sport and Fitness, said:
"There’s an energy around our teams this year as it is the last chance to represent the University of Adelaide before the merger. Representing the University is a true honour, and we’re incredibly proud of the student-athletes who wear the AU Waatu uniform with pride. We encourage students, staff, alumni, and the wider community to get behind us - show your support, pack the stands, and help create an unforgettable atmosphere. Let’s make 2025 a season to remember."
AU Waatu’s season begins with back-to-back home games at the State Basketball Centre in Wayville. They'll face the University of Newcastle on August 5 and the University of the Sunshine Coast on August 6. Entry is free for all, making it a perfect opportunity to support university sport at the highest level.

Head Coach Scott Freer said:
"There’s a real sense of excitement heading into the 2025 season. We’ve got a high-calibre group of players who bring intensity, leadership, and a genuine passion for the game. The quality across both teams is something special, and we’re looking forward to showcasing that on court. We can’t wait to get started and feel the energy from the crowd in our opening home games this week."
With a mix of returning stars and fresh talent, AU Waatu is ready to make a statement in 2025.
