More Than a Role - Sophia Costello Lives the Spirit of National Volunteer Week 2025

National Volunteer Week 2025 (19–25 May) kicks off today!

This week, Adelaide University Sport & Fitness is celebrating the people who power our 40 AU Sport clubs – the volunteers. This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is ‘Connecting Communities’, highlighting the power of volunteering to bring people together. Few people embody that spirit more than Sophia Costello.

Sophia won the 2024 Blues Award for Volunteer of the Year (Non-Student), and this week we are re-celebrating her for her extraordinary contribution to the Adelaide University Rugby Club.

A true all-rounder, Sophia is a leader in every corner of the club. In the last 12 months alone she has coached and managed the U7s (2024) and U8s (2025), played for the Women’s team and stepped in as Assistant Manager when she was injured, and served as Club Captain, Director of Operations, and Committee Member.  On top of that, she organises events, runs the canteen, and plays a vital role in recruiting and welcoming new players – all while being a single parent.

“Sophia is the glue that holds our club together,” said AU Rugby Club President, Kim Evans. “Her leadership, energy, and care for everyone at the club set the tone for a strong, welcoming culture.”

Her efforts have driven player growth, stronger community bonds, and an inclusive, thriving club environment – a perfect reflection of this year’s National Volunteers Week theme.

“Volunteering isn’t always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding,” Sophia said. “I do it because I care deeply about this club and the people in it. Watching the teams grow, especially the juniors, makes it all worthwhile.”

As National Volunteer Week 2025: Connecting Communities begins, Sophia’s story reminds us that volunteering is more than just giving time – it’s about building meaningful relationships and creating a sense of belonging.

Join us this week as we celebrate volunteers like Sophia who help make our AU Sport clubs stronger, more connected, and truly inclusive.
