The University of Adelaide men’s and women’s basketball teams have wrapped up their most successful New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) season to date, marking a historic milestone in the University’s elite sporting journey.
Competing in the nationwide New Balance UBL competition, both teams travelled across Australia to face off against the top universities in the country. Over nine weeks, the University of Adelaide proved themselves as a rising force in the league, with both the men’s and women’s teams qualifying for the finals for the first time in the University’s history.
The men’s team finished the regular season with 5 wins and 4 losses, securing 5th place out of 12 teams and advancing to the finals series. The side recorded standout victories over the University of Western Australia (UWA), the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and the University of Tasmania (UTAS).
The women’s team also finished with 5 wins and 4 losses, placing 6th out of 12 teams and qualifying for the finals for the first time ever. Their season featured wins over the University of Western Australia (UWA) and the University of Sydney (USYD), showing the growing depth in the side over the past few seasons.

Despite both teams falling short in their quarter-final matchups — the men’s side going down 91–74 to UTAS, and the women’s side narrowly losing 79–71 to USYD — the season will be remembered as a breakthrough year for the University.
Men’s coach Scott Freer praised the squad’s development over the season.
“It's been great to achieve some firsts for the program on court this year… The league has gotten stronger this year and it is the only national competition outside the NBL and WNBL and I'm very privileged to be a part of it.”
Freer also highlighted his excitement towards next season.
“I am incredibly excited about the season ahead and as soon as we got knocked out my planning for the new year started.”
Women’s coach Lachlan Coppick echoed similar sentiments, celebrating his team’s historic first finals appearance and the chance to work with Freer.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Scott and Adelaide University Sport to continue the growth of the AU Waatu program after building a strong foundation last year. I’m very much forward looking to next season.”
With the 2025 season now complete, attention turns to the next chapter as the University of Adelaide transitions to the new Adelaide University in 2026. Both teams will look to build on the foundations of this season and continue their success under the new university banner.
