In the lead-up to the UniSport Nationals 3x3 Basketball tournament held in Melbourne from 27–29 May at Monash University, four student-athletes from the University of Adelaide are preparing to represent their university on the national stage.
First-year student Everett Webb is set to make his debut at Uni Nationals in Melbourne. Originally from Canada, Everett made the switch from hockey to basketball at age 11 and never looked back. Now studying a double degree in Finance and Banking with Computer and Mathematical Sciences, he’s excited for the opportunity to step into a high-pressure tournament.
“It’s my first year at Uni Nationals, so I’m just excited to be travelling and competing with a great group,” Everett said. “I’ve always loved team sports, and 3x3 is such a fast-paced format - I'm really looking forward to it.”
Bailey Nathan, in his final year of a Bachelor of Computer Science (Advanced), will compete in both the 3x3 tournament and will also take on the 5-on-5 Uni Nationals later this year on the Gold Coast. A three-year veteran of the University Basketball League, Bailey brings both experience and ambition to the court.
“We took silver last year, and now we’re aiming for gold,” he said. “It would be incredible to qualify for the FISU World Championships. I’m also just grateful for the chance to represent the University again before I graduate.”
Electrical Engineering student Isaac Hampel returns to the 3x3 team with a clear focus - to compete hard and enjoy the challenge. He’s also been a key part of the AU Waatu’s UBL squad and is determined to build on past performances.
“There’s always a buzz when you put on the University basketball uniform,” he said. “We’ve got good chemistry, and I think we can push for finals if we play to our strengths.”
For Emil Kourani, a second-year Occupational Therapy student, this year’s tournament carries personal meaning. After missing last year’s campaign due to injuries, including a broken nose and a torn meniscus, he’s embracing the opportunity to get back on the court and representing the University of Adelaide.
“Just being here means a lot after everything last year,” Emil said. “I’ve been working hard, and I’m ready to give it everything I’ve got.”
The team comes from varied academic backgrounds, but all share a passion for basketball. Most began playing in primary school - Bailey picked up a basketball at age three, while Isaac and Emil started around age seven. Everett began later but quickly became hooked, drawn to the energy and teamwork of basketball.
As they prepare for 3x3, each athlete has adjusted their training routines from regular 5-on-5 basketball. Bailey has focused on sprint intervals and shooting with the tournament’s smaller ball, while Everett has incorporated one-on-one drills and high-intensity cardio. Emil and Isaac are drawing confidence from consistent weekly games and match fitness built over the regular basketball season.
The players agree that success in 3x3 hinges on pace, shooting accuracy, and strong defense. “This year we’re a smaller team, so we’ll rely on speed and shooting from range,” said Bailey. Everett added, “I love intense defense - it’ll be a big focus for me.” “The smaller ball suits me,” said Emil. “I’ve got a solid three-point shot and can dunk, so I’m hoping that gives me an edge.”
Balancing the demands of sport, study, and travel is also part of the challenge. Each athlete takes a different approach - some work ahead on assignments, while others use flights and hotel stays to stay on top of lectures. Everett praised the University's support: “My lecturers and tutors have been really understanding, which helps a lot.”
Beyond 3x3 Nationals, all four athletes are part of the 2025 AU Waatu squad as part of the New Balance University Basketball League and are looking ahead to a big season. With a blend of experience, motivation, and talent, the University of Adelaide’s 3x3 UniNationals squad is ready to make a statement at Monash University this week!
